Virgin Islands National Park

The biggest attraction of St. John is the national park. Start with a visit to the Virgin Islands National Park Visitors Center, located on the waterfront in Cruz Bay. Here you’ll find information on hiking, camping, snorkeling, and guided programs.

After you have your bearings, head out to the park by taxi (open air jitneys) or rental jeep. The park has many activities:

• Hike on one of the many marked trails
• snorkel the guided underwater trail at Trunk Bay
• stroll along the self-guided Cinnamon Bay Nature Trail
• visit ruins of Annaberg Sugar Plantation. (Warning: at certain times of the year, Annaberg is infested with tiny bugs called no-see-ums. No, you won’t see them, but you will feel them when they bite. Be sure to apply insect repellent before visiting this site. After three different stops here—and three sets of bites, we’ve learned the hard way that even a brief visit deserves an application of bug repellent.) This is a nice, educational stop; the open air ruins are fun for even the most restless young traveler.
