Outdoors Activities in St. Kitts

Once the last Kittitian frontier, the Southeast Peninsula is now accessible by a modern highway. Some of St. Kitts most beautiful sights and beaches are located along this area, which is also home to many vervet monkeys. (Look for them in the early mornings and late evenings.)

Turtle Beach is the most popular beach on the peninsula (actually the only one where you might have a little company). On the drive, you’ll pass a salt pond with a distinct pink hue, the result of many tiny kroll shrimp. Keep an eye out for some of the island's many birds here.

Hiking Tours

With its towering volcano, lush rainforests, and beautiful beaches, St. Kitts offers a full menu of hikes. You’ll find plenty of soothing walks along powdery beaches for families but also lots of rugged walks and hikes for those with older children and teens.

Rainforest and volcano tours are available from several operators. Guided tours of the rainforest are a popular option, most combining a guided ride with a hike. A far more strenuous hike is to the crater rim of Mt. Liamuiga, an all day excursion only for those ready for a challenge.

Greg’s Safaris, Basseterre, St. Kitts, West Indies, 869/465-4121, offers a half day guided Rainforest Safari through mountain trails into the Oceanic Rainforest. Visitors have a chance to look for birdlife, cross springs, identify exotic wildflowers, and enjoy the mist shrouded forest.

Greg’s Safari’s also offers a full day Volcano Safari. This strenuous trip includes a rugged hike up the volcano to view the mile-wide crater rim, and a chance to see the cloud forest and steaming sulphur vents in the volcanic region. The hike is a tough one, so come prepared with very good walking shoes.

Kriss Tours, Tel. 869/465-4042, offers half and full-day tours of the rainforest and, a full-day tour, of the volcanic rim.
