Horseback Riding in Nevis

The Nevis Equestrian Centre, Cole Hill, Tel. 869/469-8118, offers guided tours of the Saddle Hill area, the historic plantations, Nelson’s Lookout, historic Gingerland, and other scenic points. Many of the trails offer good views of neighboring islands. Rides last about 1 1/2 hours.

The Hermitage, Tel. 869/469-3477, has an equestrian center and offers 1 1/2 hour trail ride through historic Gingerland. Escorted trail rides are English style and taken at the pace of the least skilled rider. Headgear is provided. For riders over 250 pounds, two Belgian horses are available. Riding lessons are also available at The Hermitage. And for those who’d rather let someone else take the reins, plantation carriage rides are offered. The relaxing two or three mile ride travels through historic Gingerland on hilly backroads where vacationers can witness traditional West Indian life. The carriages are authentic Creole adaptations of mid 19th century Victorian styles and are constructed of West Indian mahogany.
