Like all destinations, the Caribbean offers a variety of accommodations:

• all-inclusive resorts
• traditional resorts and hotels with a variety of meal plans
• villas
• condominiums
• even some camping

Choosing a Caribbean accommodation is even more important than selecting a hotel for another type of vacation. You’ll find that a Caribbean hotel, unlike a property in a downtown US city, for example, becomes your home away from home. This is not just where you spend your nights, but also a good portion of your days.

First consider the type of vacation you'd like and what amenities you'd appreciate. Will you be exploring the island on your own most days? If so, you'll probably want an EP or room-only meal plan, not an all-inclusive resort. Will you want to enroll the kids in a supervised kids' program? What other features are important to your family? A waterpark? A great beach? An evening show? A game room?

Among resorts, you'll find two kinds of family-friendly resorts:

• those where kids are welcomed and even worshipped with special activities and everything from kids' discos to supervised kids' programs.

• those where kids are welcomed but where they'll need to make their own fun with family help. Don't look for supervised kids' programs at these resorts but, at the same time, you'll feel right at home in these welcoming resorts.
