Practical Information about Puerto Rico

Currency. The US dollar is the official currency.

Doctors. In an emergency, call 911. The doctors in Puerto Rico meet the same standards as those on the mainland of the United States.

Driving. Driving is on the right side. Most road signs are in both English and Spanish.

Electricity: The island uses 110 volts, 60 cycles.

Language. Both Spanish and English are the official language of Puerto Rico. You’ll find plenty of English spoken in the resort areas and in San Juan but in the smaller communities most conversation is in Spanish.

Information. Contact the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Tel. 800/866-7827 in US, 800/667-0394 in Canada. Island Information: The Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport has an excellent tourist information booth near the baggage claim area.

Time. Puerto Rico is located in the Atlantic Time Zone, one hour ahead of Eastern. The island does not observe Daylight Savings Time.
