Practical Information about Jamaica

Currency. The Jamaican dollar is the official tender; its exchange rate fluctuates frequently but at press time was about $1US=$67J. US dollars are accepted throughout the island.

Driving. Driving is British style, on the left.

Electricity. The island uses 110volts/50 cycles, although 220 is used in some of the hotels. Adapters are not required for North American appliances.

Information on Island. You will find several tourist offices across the island:

  • Kingston (64 Knutsford Blvd., Tel. 876/929-9200)
  • Montego Bay (Cornwall Beach, Tel. 876/952-4425)
  • Port Antonio (City Centre Plaza, Tel. 876/993-3051)

Language. English is the official language, although you’ll frequently hear the Jamaican patois on the street, a combination of several languages.

Time. Jamaica is on Eastern Standard Time and does not observe Daylight Savings Time.
