One of the best ways to get an introduction to Jamaica away from the usual tourist scene is to meet its residents in person. Two excellent programs allow visitors to join up with residents with shared interests.

Meet the People Program

Meet the People is a free program operated by the Jamaica Tourist Board that utilizes the services of over 500 volunteers on the island in different walks of life. Through the years, the program has matched stamp collectors, birders, private pilots, and travelers of many interests with islanders. The program is simple: just give the Jamaica Tourist Board office a call at 800/294-7687 or 888/995-9999 on the island.

Countrystyle

Countrystyle (876/962-3725, 876/962-3377 or 800/JAMAICA, Fax 876/962-1461) is another unique service. Owner Diana McIntyre Pike can arrange island experiences tailored just to the visitor’s interest.
