The beautiful island of Jamaica offers several distinct destinations that lie a few hours’ drive apart.

Resort Destinations

Montego Bay or Mo Bay is the first taste most visitors have of the island as it’s home of the north shore airport as well as many excellent resorts. Heading east, the garden city of Ocho Rios is a popular favorite with families as well as honeymooners. Quiet Port Antonio, once a hideaway for Hollywood stars, lies further east although most travelers arrive here via Kingston.

To the far west is Negril. Once a hippie haven, today it’s the preferred vacation spot for many aging yuppies who have returned with their families to enjoy its laid-back atmosphere and unbeatable sunset views. Continuing past Negril you'll find the South Coast, a quiet getaway that's growing in popularity.

The capital city of Kingston lies on the south shore, a metropolitan area that’s visited primarily for business rather than pleasure.

Problems in Paradise

We have to admit that Jamaica is not for everyone. Many travelers prefer to skip this island because of both crime and drug problems. Alhough the resorts patrol their grounds and beaches above the high water line, when you step outside the boundaries of the resort be prepared to be hassled.

Do we take our children to Jamaica? Yes, we have. Do we recommend all travelers take their children to Jamaica? No. If you have older children, especially teens, who insist on exploring on their own, Jamaica may not be the island for you. Teens (especially boys) will be offered drugs for sale if they leave the hotel property or walk along a public beach. If you’re not 100% confident of your teen’s response, choose another island.
