Children Traveling Without Both Birth Parents

Children traveling without both birth parents should have a notarized letter from the non-present parent stating permission for the child to travel with the other parent. Why all the fuss? Parental kidnappings has skyrocketed and foreign countries are trying their best to stop parental abductors from entering their countries.

In Mexico, law requires that a child traveling alone or with only one parent carries a written, notarized consent letter from the absent parent. (This includes children traveling with grandparents.) Generally, this is not a problem in the Caribbean but better safe than sorry.

This also applies if your child is bringing along a friend on the trip; you’ll want to get a notarized letter of consent from the child’s parents stating that it’s OK for the child to travel.

Also, you’ll want to make sure your child (or any child you’re traveling with) has permission to receive medical treatment during the trip. If you don’t have this letter, you won’t be able to obtain medical treatment for the child until parents can be contacted.

Permission Letters

Whether you’ll be traveling with stepchildren, grandkids, or your child’s best friend, it pays to bring along a letter of consent from the non-present birth parents.

Just what should this letter say? Here’s a general idea:

Consent for Minor Child to Travel
without Both Birth Parents

I (we) YOUR NAMES give my/our authorization for my/our minor child(ren) CHILD’S NAME/S to travel to DESTINATION aboard AIRLINE/FLIGHT NUMBER with NAME OF ADULTS ON TRIP. The scheduled date of return is DATE.

Also, I/we authorize NAME OF ADULTS ON TRIP to obtain any necessary medical treatment for my/our child on this trip.
