Barbados with Kids
The most easterly of the Caribbean islands,
Barbados has strongly contrasting east and west sides. On the Atlantic
coast, currents are strong, and jagged cliffs and sea caves are carved
by the waters force. In contrast, western beaches, home to most
of the island's resorts, offer placid Caribbean waters with excellent
visibility, little current, and a gentle trade breeze. This island has welcomed tourist for hundreds
of years, as far back as George Washington who came here to enjoy the
healthful climate (much needed by his tuberculosis-stricken brother, Lawrence). Today Barbados enjoys an atmosphere that's a mix of British and Caribbean lifestyles. As you drive across the island, look for both men and women in cool white suits on the cricket fields. In the afternoons, take time to enjoy high tea. And listen to the voices of the Barbadians or Bajans (rhymes with Cajun): their accent is almost British.
